Honoring Native American Heritage Month

This November, we’re celebrating Native American Heritage Month — a time to recognize the rich culture, history, and contributions of a community that has had a lasting impact on our country. As we continue working toward breaking down barriers to financial wellness, we know that financial inclusion for Native Americans requires understanding their unique challenges.

But here's the problem: there’s a serious lack of data on Native American wealth. A 2022 study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis gives us one of the few insights into this issue, showing that the median wealth of Four Bands clients — a community organization serving Native populations — was just $5,524. That’s less than one-eighth of the median wealth of Black households and more than 50 times less than white households.

At Stackwell, we’re focused on closing these gaps by making financial education and investment more accessible to everyone. While there’s still a lot of work ahead, this month we celebrate the Native American community and continue to push for a more equitable future for all.

Our five-step financial check-up

Taking time to check in with your finances helps you stay on top of your goals and adapt to life’s changes. Whether it’s adjusting your budget, tackling debt, or preparing for the unexpected, small steps now can lead to a stronger financial future. Use this quick five-step check-up to set yourself up for success in 2025 and beyond.

  1. Review your budget. How did your spending change throughout the year? If you went over budget, it might be time to come up with a strategy to cut back or bring in more income in 2025. If you spent less, consider boosting your savings or investment contributions.

  2. Build your emergency fund. Without an emergency fund, unexpected expenses — like a job loss or medical emergency — could cause some serious damage to your finances. Review your savings and set a goal to grow that safety net, even if it’s just a little each month.

  3. Review your subscriptions and cut what you don’t use. Take a look at your subscriptions — many of us sign up for services we rarely use. Canceling the ones you don’t need can help you save more than you might think.

  4. Tackle your high-interest debt. High-interest debt, like credit cards, can drain your finances. Reducing it — even a little at a time — will save you money in the long run. If you’re only making the minimum payments, try adding a little extra each month to bring down the balance faster and save on interest.

  5. Look into refinancing. If you have loans like a mortgage or student loans, refinancing could save you money, especially now that interest rates are dropping. Compare your current rates with today’s offers, and see if refinancing could help you lower your monthly payments or pay off your loan faster.

Building wealth for all of us

At Stackwell, we believe that wealth-building isn’t just about personal financial success — it’s about creating a foundation of stability that allows us to support those around us. When we invest in our futures, we’re not only investing in our own security but also in the well-being of our families, communities, and neighbors.

As we approach this time of year, a season of reflection, we’re reminded of how much we have to be grateful for. It’s a time to recognize the support we receive from those around us, especially in uncertain times. From helping one another through challenges to coming together for shared goals, we rely on the strength of our community.

At Stackwell, our team members are proud to be part of a company that’s mission is to help individuals secure their financial futures while also fostering the kind of connected, resilient communities where we all rise together. This season, as we look around and appreciate what we have, let’s also remember that our financial journeys can empower us to support our communities and strengthen the bonds that make us all stronger.

We asked Stackers and members of the Stackwell team to share what they're hopeful and grateful for, and we received some heartfelt responses. From aspirations about the future to gratitude for personal growth and meaningful connections, here’s what they had to say:

I’m hopeful:

  • About my future

  • To finish the semester off strong

  • Watching my good friends become parents

  • To graduate college and own my own business

  • That we can take better care of each other

  • For change

I’m grateful:

  • To see my family grow and thrive

  • For our team and our opportunity

  • For my children, the teachable moments that come out of hard situations, and the opportunity to raise resilient kids

  • For new friends and starting over at any age

  • For my health & body

  • For community and the kindness I witness every day
